Asthma Attacks and What Patients Should Know

Ask an Expert. Pulmonary and critical care physician Dr. André Holmes explains how specialists evaluate asthma attacks and the warning signs patients should never ignore.

What is the first thing going through your mind when a patient comes in with an asthma attack?

The first question I ask is how long the symptoms have been going on. That tells me how much time I may have to stabilize the patient and how aggressive we need to be early on.

What do most patients get completely wrong about asthma attacks?

Many patients think asthma attacks are routine and something they should just push through.

The truth is that the faster you seek medical attention when symptoms worsen, the better your long-term outcomes tend to be.

Frequent or untreated attacks can lead to worsening lung function, longer recovery periods, and an overall poorer quality of life.

When do you know an asthma attack might be becoming dangerous?

All asthma attacks have the potential to become dangerous, but there are certain warning signs that concern us immediately.

These include using accessory muscles to breathe, signs of respiratory fatigue, or changes in mental status such as confusion or extreme exhaustion.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Asthma attacks should never be ignored. Seeking care early and recognizing warning signs can help prevent serious complications.
